(INDIANAPOLIS, IN) February 3, 2025 — The National Police Association announced a second Ohio county was added to its national billboard campaign asking people to support the police by thanking a cop.
Nestled in the picturesque Eastern region of Ohio, Belmont County offers visitors a blend of scenic beauty, rich history, and small-town charm. With a population of 66,497 as of the 2020 census, it’s a warm and welcoming destination that travelers can explore with ease. St. Clairsville, the county seat, is the heart of Belmont, while Martins Ferry stands proudly as its largest city. The county’s name—derived from the French term for “beautiful mountain”—hints at its natural charm and rolling landscapes.
Among the historical landmarks is Dilles Bottom, once the site of Fort Dille, founded in the 1790s along the banks of the Ohio River across from Moundsville, West Virginia. Over time, Belmont County evolved, losing portions of its land to neighboring counties, but retaining its unique boundaries since 1813.
For decades, Belmont County was the proud host of the legendary Jamboree in the Hills. From 1977 to 2018, this outdoor country music festival attracted thousands of fans from across the country, filling the air with the sounds of some of the biggest names in country music. Its legacy lives on as part of Belmont’s rich cultural fabric.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply looking for small-town hospitality, Belmont County has something for everyone. Stroll through historic St. Clairsville, visit the scenic Ohio River communities, or uncover the stories of the county’s past at local museums and landmarks. With its blend of industry, history, and culture, Belmont County invites you to discover the beauty of “the beautiful mountain.”
